Perched above the Oi River, this scenic overlook in Kameyama Park offers the absolute best panoramic view of the forested Arashiyama gorge and the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge. It is a peaceful, less-crowded alternative to the nearby bamboo groves, especially breathtaking during autumn foliage and spring cherry blossom seasons. Expect a short, slightly steep uphill walk along paved paths and stone steps to reach the observation deck.

The Kameyama Area of Arashiyama Park occupies a hilly ridge between the Bamboo Forest and the riverbank. The summit observation deck faces upstream into the enclosed Hozugawa Gorge rather than downstream toward Togetsukyō Bridge. Park trails consist of paved ramps and uneven stone steps without artificial lighting after sunset, making flat footwear essential and night visits inadvisable.

Can you see Togetsukyo Bridge from the Arashiyama Park viewpoint?
No. Despite common misconceptions in tourist literature, the summit observation deck looks upstream to the northwest into Hozugawa Gorge. The view takes in the forested slopes of Mount Ogura and Mount Arashi, traditional wooden sightseeing boats, and the gorge river. Togetsukyo Bridge is situated downstream to the southeast and is not visible.
Can you see the Sagano Scenic Railway from the observation deck?
Yes. The Sagano Romantic Train tracks run along the opposite hillside above the Hozu River, and trains can be viewed crossing open sections between tunnels. Heavy foliage during summer can partially obstruct the train tracks, making winter and early spring the clearest viewing seasons.
How do you get to the viewpoint from the Bamboo Forest?
Walk west through the Sagano Bamboo Forest toward the entrance gate of Ōkōchi Sansō Villa. Instead of turning north, turn south directly into the northern entrance of Kameyama Park. Follow the directional signs uphill along the paved trail and stone stairways for roughly five to eight minutes to reach the deck.
