Built in 1895 to celebrate Kyoto's 1,100th anniversary, Heian-jingū is a striking Shinto shrine featuring a scale replica of the imperial palace. While the massive torii gate and vibrant vermillion buildings are impressive, the real highlight is the expansive stroll garden behind the main hall, showcasing four distinct ponds and a famous weeping cherry tree canopy.

Visit in early to mid-April when the garden's rare weeping cherry trees bloom slightly later than Kyoto's main cherry blossoms.
