Daimonji Fire Bed
About
Perched on the slopes of Mount Takamado, the Daimonji Fire Bed is the concrete foundation where the massive character for 'Dai' (meaning large) is lit during Nara's annual mid-August Obon festival. Hikers who trek up the mountain trail are rewarded with a peaceful, forested atmosphere and a spectacular, crowd-free panoramic view over Nara Basin. It is a fantastic, active alternative to the crowded Todai-ji area for those seeking a scenic hike.

The trailhead starts near Byakugo-ji temple; wear sturdy hiking shoes as the steep, unpaved path can be slippery after rain.
