Higashimuki translates to 'facing east'. During the Nara period, the street ran directly alongside the western grounds of Kofuku-ji temple. Because respect was paid to the influential temple complex, buildings and houses were initially constructed exclusively along the street's west side, all facing eastward toward Kofuku-ji.
Is the famous Nakatanidou rapid mochi pounder inside Higashimuki arcade?
No, Nakatanidou is not located inside the covered arcade. It sits just past the southern terminus of Higashimuki along Sanjo-dori, immediately across from the entry arch of Mochiidono Center Street. Visitors simply exit the south end of Higashimuki onto Sanjo-dori and find the shop on the left.
