About
Naramachi Nigiwai-no-Ie is a beautifully restored, 100-year-old traditional merchant townhouse (machiya) that offers a free look into Nara's historic daily life. Visitors can explore the preserved living quarters, tatami rooms, and a classic inner courtyard garden that reflects the changing seasons. It is an ideal, quiet stop to experience authentic Taisho-era architecture and Japanese spatial design without the usual tourist crowds.

Is admission free and do visitors need to book ahead?
General admission is completely free and regular self-guided entry requires no advance reservation. Visitors can walk in during opening hours to view the house and inner garden. However, scheduled weekend cultural workshops, such as tea ceremonies and kamado rice-cooking classes, require prior online booking and separate fees.
When is Naramachi Nigiwai-no-Ie closed?
The house closes every Wednesday throughout the year, but stays open if Wednesday is a Japanese national holiday. It also closes annually for the year-end and New Year period from December 29 through January 3, alongside occasional temporary closures for special maintenance.
Is visitor parking available on site?
No visitor parking is provided on the property. Those driving must use commercial coin-operated parking lots located elsewhere in Naramachi. Public transit is recommended: the site is a 13-minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station or a 5-minute walk from the Tanaka-cho bus stop.
