Located inside the Todai-ji Cultural Center just west of the Nandaimon gate, the museum serves as a modern preservation space for statuary and liturgical items relocated from various historical halls. Temple materials recommend watching the introductory historical film shown near the entrance, which explains Emperor Shōmu's decree for the Great Buddha before continuing toward the Daibutsuden. Admission tickets must be paid in cash, and visitors holding combined tickets should note that while the Great Buddha Hall opens earlier, the museum does not admit visitors until 9:30.

Yes. Individual visitors can buy a combined ticket covering both the Todai-ji Museum and the Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall). The set ticket costs ¥1,200 for junior high school students and older, and ¥600 for elementary school students, purchasable at the ticket windows of either location.
Are luggage lockers available on the Todai-ji grounds?
Coin lockers are available directly behind the ticket counter inside the Todai-ji Museum within the Cultural Center. Visitors carrying heavy bags or backpacks can store luggage here before touring the surrounding precinct, as coin lockers are otherwise not installed across the open temple grounds or historical wooden halls.
Can visitors take photos or bring pets inside the Todai-ji Museum?
No. Photography, sketching, and flashlights are forbidden inside all exhibition rooms of the museum. In addition, pets are completely prohibited inside the museum building. While small pets in carriers or held in arms may enter the Great Buddha Hall, no animals are allowed into the museum galleries.
Can admission fees be paid by credit card or electronic payment?
No. Admission fees for the Todai-ji Museum and all other temple halls must be paid in cash with Japanese yen. Ticket counters do not accept credit cards, IC transport cards, mobile pay apps, or travel coupons, so travelers should withdraw cash beforehand.
